Innistrad brings the new way to mill. With zombies!

Mill, Innistrad, Fun, Standard

So everyones been doing these blogs where they talk about what they're most excited for in the new upcoming block innistrad. Well, as my B/G Landfall-mill deck will be going to the wayside in about two weeks i guess it's time to return to owning libraries to achieve victory in the most annoying of ways.

People hate mill decks and undersandably so, it's effed up watching your awesome cards dissapear to the place that they never return (except decks that are designed to do that in the first place ofc). So this time there's no more complaining since you will be milling YOUR OWN GRAVEYARD!

You heard me, starring this little butterball right here it's time to make yourself lose to win!

Laboratory maniac

(U)(2) Creature - 2/2 Human Wizard

If you would draw a card while your library has no cards in it, you win the game instead.

Friggin brilliant, time to have fun. Here's some cheeky cards that immediately catch the eye to include in your combo now that you're decided to target your own graveyard. The whole of this deck now becomes to mill your own deck either to the end of it or to ending up putting enough of your cards into the Gy so that you overpower with zombie cards, explained later on. It sort of became hybrid all of a sudden lol.

Deranged Assistant

(U)(1) Creature - 1/1 Human Wizard

(Tap), Put the top card of your library into your graveyard: Add (1) to your mana pool.

These two are pretty standard for making it all go a bit faster and smoother. A pretty good trade off for (1) mana considering you're gettin yourself anyhow. The cost seems a bit high but it would probably be too good if it were  1 mana. yep too good.

(U)(1) Creature - 1/1 Bird Spirit

(2): Target player puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard. Mindshrieker gets +X/+X until end of turrn, where X is that card's converted mana cost.

The mindshrieker is just ridiculous. Every turn it gets beefy for you burning your own library and the low mana cost and ability cost make it all the sweeter, It's already a 1/1 flier so omg this card rules! Even if you need to mill their gy for some reason it'll work out nicely.

Unburial Rites

(B)(4) Sorcery

Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.

Flashback: (W)(3)

Splashing a little bit of black here for the first time since it's easy to accomlish it with the 8 U/B multicolors and a few swamps in there, maybe even the new B/W land to help you pay it's flashback cost, a few U/W lands should help to change it up, make this deck really original which is what i'm all about. lots of time to draw a swamp lol. This card will really come in handy for bringing back those snapcaster mages you accidentally milled. Great combo imo.

Mirror-Mad Phantasm

(U)(U)(3) Creature - 5/1 Spirit

(U)(1): Mirror-Mad Phantasm's owner shuffles it into his or her library. If that player does, he or she reveals cards from the top of that library until a card named Mirror-Mad Phantasm is revealed. The player puts that card onto the battlefield and all other cards revealed this way into his or her graveyard

This card just screams c-c-combo. Hold onto this guy and a draw card for those times when you just wanna play with this guy over and over again. Only two in the deck so he's now over drawn and of course so you get to mill a whole bunch of yourself when you get to do it. Fun times, the synergy is insane already.

Skaab Ruinator

(U)(U)(1) Creature - 5/6 Zombie Horror

As an additional cost to cast Skaab Ruinator, exile three creature cards from your graeyard.

You may cast Skaab Ruinator from your graveyard.

This dude is a shoe in, has to be in there he's just so damn cheap, beefy and your gy is gonna be full anyway. Easy way to win without your lab maniac. easy to make choices on what to exile by the time you play him you should be filling your gy to  high heavens. And if you don't want to attack he's a 5/6 for cryin outloud, just block and wait for the win the proper wa

Definitely four of the Ruinators. If you have 2-4 in your gy, just cast one and exile a few other copies? Or cast all of em. And thowmp.

Snapcaster Mage

(U)(2) Creature - 2/1 Human Wizard

When Snapcaster Mage enters the battlefield, target instant or sorcery card in your graveyard gains flashback until end of turn. The flashback cost is equal to its mana cost.

Of course this one has to be in here, he's contagious... He fits so well, It just so happens that you'll have plenty of cards in your gy to play again all you like. 4 of these guys in the deck will make it real easy to play anything you want.

Forbidden Alchemy

(U)(3) Instant

Look at the top four cards of your library. Put one of them into your hands and the rest into your graveyard.

Flashback: (B)(6)

This card is a big hit since it helps you pick and choose which card you like the most and you can get the snapcaster for sure. Then snapcast the Forbidden sorcery again ha. Or a counterspell, draw card or return-creature card and save this card for it's flashback cost. brilliant.

Cellar Door

(2) Artifact

(3)(Tap): Target player puts the bottom card of his or her library into his or her graveyard. If it's a creature card, you put a 2/2 black zombie creature token onto the battlefield.

You can do this on yourself for blockers if you want, The artifact is still iffy for me, but i figured it's worth mentioning.

Stacking those zombies on the field for defense or to make em synergize with the zombies i mention below.

Nephalia Drownyard

(Tap): Add (1) mana to your mana pool.

(U)(B)(1)(Tap): Target player puts the top 3 cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.

The land is kinda nice if you dont have a turn 3-4 card and you're biding your time. Just stack the deck with the U/B multi-lands and you'll be fine, few swamps and all that too.

Now comes the time when you realize you can't play your alchemist the way you want, you lost the first round to a white deck and you know they're targetting your lab manic for exile. It's about time to change how you're milling and start charging in with mass zombie, an interesting twist innistrad has brought to my attention.

Almost all of the above cards still apply for when it's time to attack your opponents graveyard instead. Take out the Mirror-Mad phantasm if you want, the lab maniac and it's time to sub in a few pinch hitters. SCHWING.

Undead Alchemist

(U)(3) Creature - 4/2 Zombie

If a Zombie you control would deal combat damage to a player, instead that player puts that many cards from the top of his or her library into his or her graveyard.

Whenever a creature card is put into an opponent's graveyard from his or her library, exile the card and put a 2/2 black zombie creature token onto the battlefield.

The Alchemist is a great twist, you can include a few zombie cards in your sideboard or mainboard if you like, since i decided to splash black in here probably... Zombies help you kill your opponent by milling your own gy either way, you can keep the Skaab Ruinator if you like now and swap the Lab maniac and the mad phantasm out.

Trepanation Blade

(3) Artifact Equipment

Whenever equipped creature attacks, defending player reveals cards from the top of his or her library until he or she reveals a land card. The creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn for each card revealed this way. That player puts the revealed cards into his or her graveyard.?

Equip (2)

extra mill, extra damage. enough said. Put the Sword of body and mind in there and that's brilliant. Good solid additions.

Now don't forget to add things like surgical extraction, on the sideboard for when it's zombie mill time. maybe even keep it in there all the time. Sadistric sacrament goes out with zendikar but we've still got memoricide to compliment it.

All of these cards are either going in the deck, the sideboard or at least worth mentioning for how awesome they are. planeswalkerslibrary has the fully spoiled block.

Feeling of Dread

(W)(1) Instant

Tap up to two target creatures

(U)(1) Flashback

Very good defensive and offensive card. 4 in the deck gives you nice security and of course another reason to actually have white in the deck lol...

Purify the Grave

(W) Instant

Exile Target card from a graveyard.

(W) Flashback

At least on sideboard if you just need to get rid of one card of don't have moolah for surgical extraction. It's a nice one because it comes with flashback and you may just want to take out the snapcaster mage the more and more i think about it.

Silverchase Fox

(W)(1) Creature - 2/2 Fox

(W)(1), Sacrifice Silverchase Fox: Exile target enchantment.

This card will defnitely be a part of your sideboard if not mainboard, enchantments are HUGE again this block so it's time to make sure the worst ones are taken care of. Then return him from your gy and do it some more :P

Back from the Brink

(U)(U)(2) Enchantment

Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of that card. Activate this only any time you could cast a sorcery.

I probably won't use it but it's a great card for other decks and maybe it could be a sideboard card here even. Worth mention as easily one of the coolest super-power cards of the block.

Dream Twist

(U) Instant

Target player puts the top three cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.

(U)(1) Flashback

This card could replace any of the draw cards in the deck, it's basically 6 cards for 3 mana. Great to mill and cast later, getting those last 3 cards out of their gy or prepping yourself to win with the lab maniac. At the rate of which innistrad is putting things that have to do with the graveyard we'll see a way to play cards from the gy all the time very soon i hope. giving you the ability to play those lands and enchantments from the gy directly. Would not surprise me at all.

Selhoff Occultist

(U)(2) Creature - 2/3 Human Rogue

Whenever Selhoff Occultist or another creature dies, target player puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard.

Ok now this little beauty seems underwhelming at first but that's ANY creature dying, not just your own. Not to mention it still happens when she goes. Even if she's not right for this deck you could put her in a nice birthing pod mill deck maybe? Type - I probably but still... Worth mentioning like all the other new cards today.

Ghoulcaller's Chant

(B) Sorcery

Choose One --- Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand; or return two target zombie creature cards from your graveyard to your hand.

Should be a staple for any zombie deck. Even if you return a different kind of creature to your hand you still have the option to get with two zombies instead! beautiful versatility and i truly do enjoy the (1) CMC.

Unbreathing Horde

(B)(2) Creature - 0/0 Zombie

Unbreathing Horde comes into play with a +1/+1 counter on it for each other zombie you control and each zombie card in your graveyard.

If Unbreathing Horde would be dealt damage, prevent that damage and remove a +1/+1 counter from it.

I did mention this one below but it's definitely included now, This card gets big and scary and having 4 of them is a definite way to go. A few in the gy and 1 in play plus 2 to 3 other zombies in play makes him a 5/5 right off the bat. Just think of how scary he is when he comes in right after you sac this next card...

Grimoire of the Dead

(4) Legendary Artifact

(1)(Tap): Discard a card, put a study counter on Grimoire of the Dead.

(Tap), Remove three study counters from Grimoire of the Dead and sacrifice it: Return all creatures from all graveyard to the battlefield under your control. They're black zombies in addition to their other types and colors.

Thought i'd spell this artifact out for everyone to show what a big deal it is, and since that crappy picture the other day didn't show me the mana cost or anything like that. This card rules, must have at least two of these in your deck so you're sure to get one off. Remember the fallen is a great way to get this guy back if you mill it accidentally, and as i've mentioned in comments below it synergizes with the Undead Alchemist and Unbreathing Horde. After you use this it also ensures that your next attack is the end of it all. should be ready to sac by turn 7 or so.

Ghoulcaller's Bell

(1) Artifact

(Tap): Each player puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard.

Such a great artifact, It's like the shriekhorn only better for this deck entirely. Helps you fill both graveyards at the same time in preparation for you to bring them all back to the battlefield for you to play with. Bwahahaahaaa!! MUST HAVE 4x!!

Runechanter's Pike

(2) Artifact Equipment

Equipped creature has first strike and gets +X/+0 where X is the number of instand and sorcery cards in your graveyard.

Equip (2)

Could be worth using, It's definitely going to give whoever you put it on a boost but we'll see how well it synergizes. Worth mentioning for sure just cuz i like the first strike and how cheap it is.

Mask of Avacyn

(2) Artifact Equipment

Equipped creature gets +1/+2 and has Hexproof.

Equip (3)

Very nice little addition to protect Geth, the undead alchemist or the lab maniac assuming you still wanna run him. Makes for a nice little defender boost too. Definitely nice for sideboard to pull out when you're got removal problems to deal with.

Hope you like my idea, it could work either way you like. Keep milling your own deck and include the zombies all the time or just target both decks and make em cry with the zombie swarm. Hmm... needs more thought now. Either way, milling your own GY is the new way to be the guy everybody hates.

Innistrad bring lots of excitement with the vampires, werewolves and new human tokens and i'm sure i'll have a B/R vampire deck real soon but this is what i like most so far. Zombie nom/mill yourself ftw!

Opinions welcome but get detailed too!
